Daily Prompt: Shape Up or Ship Out

Life can get ugly.

For The Daily Post.

– Adit Ganguly

As we celebrate the 1-month anniversary of The Educated Illiterates, we present to you a very special post; one that tells the story of how our friendship began and how it developed over the years:

It was the summer of 2011, the temperature was a sweltering 35 degrees Celsius and the internet was bursting with new opportunities. Much like ever average pre-teen we were all over Facebook, trying to counter the boredom flowing through our veins.

Activity during the day reduced as nocturnal instincts took over; 2 am was suddenly the middle of the day. This was when I started talking to two of the most chilled out people (more chilled out than even Dermi Cool) : The ‘gay pals’.

Adit here. We were most definitely not gay! Don’t listen to that cunt. Anyway, the lack of constructive work, added to the opportunities created by a lightning-fast internet connection, led to the commencement of a new friendship. One of those you treasure the most, even though our only means of communication was the internet; it was priceless. Staying up till day-break, arguing fruitlessly for hours on the most random of topics and basically just fagging around made up our nights.

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”

– C.S. Lewis

An hour of ‘orientation’ in our school’s stuffy auditorium, a payment of Rs. 11,000 and a month later, we found ourselves in an ‘ACE Creative Learning’ class. It was by far the most efficient method to trap parents with bid dreams with baits of scholarships and what-not.

May 2011 consisted of spending days in the last benches of classrooms, playing ‘NinJump’ and ‘Cut The Rope’ on the then-in-fashion iPod Touch and spending nights group-chatting with the newly formed ‘Atrion’. The thing about us was that the topics never fell flat. There was always something new to talk or argue about at any given time. Quickly, we got acquainted with one another and just enjoyed every night as it came.

The summer ended all too soon for our liking, but the late-night group-chatting sessions? Never. The only constant – except for my consistently low Math marks – in a world of variables. Then came 8th grade which passed by in a jiffy. There was this one particular night when the three of us had resolved not to sleep at all, and we tried using this group-call app called ‘Fring’. My advice, don’t ever use it!

Oh yeah, ‘Fring’! That night was a comedy-of-errors, unlike the saga of planned consistency our ‘night-outs’ had become. We spent most of 8th grade decorating the corridor, outside the classroom, but no mater what, Atrion night-outs were always there to fall back upon.

According to our dear Ashika, a German team was to take on a Spanish team in the English Premier League during the Champions League Finale, 2012. (PS: My prediction wasn’t too far away. It was Chelsea that went on to win on penalties.)

9th grade began. Another mishap worth recalling is ‘The Dark Knight Rises incident”. Here’s what happened: we had just got back home after watching the movie, and Adit, in his usual horny mood, tweeted saying, “Catwoman made my Dark Knight rise.” Let’s just say mommy didn’t take that too well.

Adit here again. In my defense, that was the tweet of the year, and it never failed to crack me up! I mean, “Catwoman made my Dark Knight rise”; that’s bloody hilarious! Although, I probably do owe Mrs. Ramesh an apology.

9th grade came to an end without much changing, except that I had managed to scrape a ‘B2’ in Math this time around. The night-outs continued as usual as summer 2013 began. Couches became our new best friends and our kitchens seemed a little too far away.

Here’s a fun fact: An “Adit” (from Latin aditus, entrance) is an entrance to an underground mine which is horizontal or nearly horizontal, by which the mine can be entered, drained of water, ventilated, and minerals extracted at the lowest possible level.

After the slightly disappointing ‘Iron Man III’, a decent movie was all we wanted. Plans were made for ‘Gippi’ (Read: ‘Jippi’ – a little bit of an inside joke.) I ended up reaching a little late – okay maybe more than a little – thanks to Bangalore’s beautiful traffic situation. My bad, guys. Sorry. It was probably one of the most random movies I had ever seen, but a memorable day all the same.

Then came this:

It all began at 00:07 am on 08-05-13.

The most productive act of Summer ’13.

And now, exactly a month later: (Cue: Hans Zimmer background score)
